Prof. J. B. Corbett Passes to His Reward
Prof. John B. Corbett died Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. E. Ellison, after a few days’ illness succeeding a period of frail health. Funeral services were held Monday at 3 o’clock at the house, his pastor, Rev. Fuller Bergstresser, officiating. Burial was in Abilene cemetery. A large number of friends was present to show respect for his memory and the floral tributes were many and beautiful.
In the death of Prof. Corbett Abilene has lost a citizen of culture and refinement – a gentleman in the truest sense of the term. He quietly passed from the land of our breathing into the inheritance of saints. Mr. Corbett was born in Guernsy [sic] county, Ohio, on Jan. 7, 1842. He was a graduate of Wittenberg College, Springfield, Ohio, in the class of 1866, and also of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Springfield. For three years after his graduation he was principal of Mendota Academy at Mendota, Ill., and then became pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran church in St. Louis, Mo., where he remained until 1872, when he came to Abilene as principal of the public schools. More than twenty-five years ago he went to Bunker Hill, engaging in business and making a success of it. He was county superintendent of schools of Russel [sic] county for several terms and was once a member of the Kansas legislature. Three years ago he came to Abilene, making his home with his only child, Mrs. H. E. Ellison, and there he passed away full of years and good works.
