A beloved Purcell High School Basketball coach and science teacher, he was the husband of Nedra Matthews, who died in Dec. 2000.

The winningest coach in Oklahoma high school boys basketball history. Matthews went 922-245 over 40 years, mostly at Purcell, where he won three state titles.

His own individual scoring records: Although he was only 5' 8", Boney was quick and athletic. It was reported that he scored 98 points for Roff in a 142-0 win over Leigh in 1927 - an Oklahoma state record. Boney had 14 touchdowns and 13 or 14 extra points as recorded in National football records: Most touchdowns, game--14, John Cook, Beatrice, Neb., vs. Tarkio, Mo., 1912; Leroy "Boney" Matthews, Roff, Okla., 1927.
