He had lived in Buncombe County, N.C. for the past 60 years. He retired in 1988 as chairman of the chemical engineering department at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, where he had been an instructor since 1969. He had taught at Enka High School from 1957 to 1969.
He was a deacon and chairman of the building committee at West Asheville Baptist Church. An Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and was a POW during the war. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1951 from UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a son of John Obed Morrell and Evelyn Hughes Morrell.
He was survived by his wife, Doris Anne Riddle Morrell; a daughter, Deborah Leigh West of Candler, N.C.; a son, Robert Weldon Morrell of Candler, N.C.; a sister, Patricia Eakes of Cartersville, Georgia; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 1991 in West Asheville Baptist Church with Rev. James H. Johnson officiating. Military rites were conducted by Enka High Junior ROTC. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
