Jean Louis Bourbon, son of Jean Antoine Bourbon and Alexise Mulin Bourbon, was born at Salins, Jura, Franche-Comte, France, not far from the border with Switzerland. In 1855, the family immigrated to Washington County, Missouri, and settled on land just west of Richwoods.
