James W. Beams Loses Life in Vietnam
Marine Warrant Officer James W. Beams, 35, of Arcadia, died at DaNang, Vietnam, Thursday, July 27th. The exact cause of his death is not known at this time and according to the message Jim's father received from Wallace N. Greene, Jr., General USMC Commandant, an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.
Warrant Officer Beams has a wife, Mrs. Colleen Beams, and five children, Jon, Melinie, Lelah, Mary Kay, and Nanette, living in Santa Ana, California.
Jim had been in Vietnam since September 12, 1966, and was due to finish his tour there in 90 days. He was born at Ord, Nebraska, September 26, 1931. The family moved to Arcadia in 1932, where Jim attended school, graduating from high school in 1949. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in the fall of that year and had been in the Marines ever since. He served in Korea during the Korean War. Arcadia was home to Jim and interment will be in the Arcadia cemetery. Survivors, besides his wife and children, are his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gould of Grand Island; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Beams of Arcadia; a brother, Floyd Beams of Blacksburg, Va.; and three sisters, Elva Belle Burt of Columbia, Mo., Mrs. Gwen Keldsen of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Faith Beams of Arcadia. Jim was a member of the Arcadia Methodist Church.
