Eugene Ringhouse, Havana Resident, 104
HAVANA: Eugene C. Ringhouse, 104, of 203 N. Harpham St, died at 2 p.m. Friday, June 25, 1999, at his home.
Born Jan. 18, 1895, in Quiver Township to William and Mary Beebe Ringhouse, he married Alvena Koke on Jan. 5, 1928, in Havana. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert and Kenneth, both of Easton; four daughters, Lila Dark of Macomb, Bernice Hall of Havana, Rosalie Conklin of Springfield, and Mary Ann See of Chillicothe; one sister, Connie Frisch of Peoria; 20 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Havana, IL.
A World War I Army veteran, he served in France. In December 1998, he was awarded France's highest honor, the National Order of the Legion of Honor -- the French equivalent of the Medal of Honor.
He was a member of Havana Post 138 American Legion.
He taught school for eight years, was the manager of Biggs Elevator for 16 years and farmed until his retirement in 1964. He was a member of the Mason County Farm Bureau.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at his church. The Rev. Martin W. Liebmann will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hurley Funeral Home and 30 minutes before services at the church. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana, IL.
Memorials may be made to his church, the American Legion or a charity of the donor's choice.
