Army Spc Christopher Barton was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was killed in Khowst province when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire. Chris joined the Army on December 30, 2008 as an infantryman. His many awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Expert Weapons Qualification Badge (Rifle), and the Overseas Service Bar. People remember the smile that was always on Chris' face and his desire to make others feel better about any situation. When he came home for the last time, his hometown made sure that Chris was given the honor he so richly deserved. The town rallied on a short notice schedule that included sending out telephone messages asking businesses to shut down for a short time and asking if the local school could have students stand out front on the road to pay their respects. Everyone came together and gave Chris a heartfelt sendoff. Hundreds lined the streets waving American flags and holding their hands over their hearts as his procession wound its way to his funeral location. Chris is survived by his wife, Heather Godwin Barton.
