Edward was the seventh child of John Cotton and Mary Ricketts, he was born in Anne Arundel County, MD. He married Nancy Haley and the couple had ten children between 1810 and 1835.
The family was in Salt Creek Twp. as early as 1819, when son, Jesse was born there on 19 August.
Edward was one of the first settlers of Mt Hope, he helped to draw the Plat Map of forty lots for the town on November 24, 1827.
