He married Amelia Grimm in September of 1905. They had four children: Leo Jr, Leona, Mary Jane, and Winifred.
While doing work on the Union School in Salt Lake City on May 28, 1940, Leo lost his footing while on the roof and fell about thirty feet. A county ambulance brought him to St. Mark's Hospital.
He seemed to recover for a short time before taking an unexpected turn for the worst and passing away the next day at the hospital. He was 54 years old.
