While doing work on the Union School in Salt Lake City on May 28, 1940, Leo lost his footing while on the roof and fell about thirty feet. A county ambulance brought him to St. Mark's Hospital.
He seemed to recover for a short time before taking an unexpected turn for the worst and passing away the next day at the hospital. He was 54 years old.
