LONG ILL HEALTH SUICIDE CAUSE

Charles Alltop, Who cut throat, Had Long Been Sick

The many home friends of Charles Alltop were sorry to learn of his suicide yesterday at Indianapolis as announced in The Telephone last evening. Last night Undertaker Otto Gillaspy and Mr. Alltop's wife and daughter went to Indianapolis and will return with the remains over the I.C. at 7 o'clock and the funeral arrangements will be made after the party reaches home.

The suicide was undoubtedly caused by despondency over ill health. Several years ago Alltop, while working at his trade as a carpenter, mashed his foot. Part of it was amputated and later tuberculosis of the bone set in. Some time ago he was at the army hospital at Hot Springs, Arkansas, for treatment but did not recover his health. He had been away from Bloomington about two months when the word came of his suicide yesterday. Mr. Alltop served in the Spanish-American War under Capt. William M. Louden in Company H and was one of the best soldiers in that outfit.

------------------

An Indianapolis paper says of the suicide: "Charles Alltop, 45 years old, who lived at the National Soldiers' Home at Marion, Indiana, committed suicide yesterday morning in a barn in the rear of the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Cora Alltop, 2910 Sherman Avenue, by cutting his throat and wrists with a razor. The barking of a dog attracted Mrs. Alltop to the barn and she called Omer Goldsborough of the Riverside Coal Company who entered the building and found the body. Alltop left a note saying, "May God forgive me." He was a soldier in the Spanish-American War and was badly crippled, being forced to walk with a crutch. It is believed that he was despondent because of his condition.
