Winston David Ackerman was the son of Winston Anthony and Velma Corine (Stone) Ackerman. He owned and operated Ackerman Bail Bonding and Loan Company in Monett and was a former area auto dealer. He was a member of the Monett Lions Club, Monett Masonic Lodge 129 AF and AM, Abou Ben Adhem Temple in Springfield, Barry County Shrine Club, Joplin Valley of Scottish Rites, and St. Edward's Catholic Church in Cassville.

He married Shirley J. Ford on January 3, 1989, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
