A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, N.C., he was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. J. Arthur Penland. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Western Carolina University at Cullowhee, N.C.
For 42 years, he was a high school teacher in the Buncombe County School System. He was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church and Hominy Masonic Lodge No. 491.
He was survived by his wife, Grace Perry Penland; a son, Alden L. Penland II of Killingworth, Conn.; three sisters, Helen Lamb, Bonnie Howell and Clara Wright of Candler, N.C.; and three granddaughters.
Masonic graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, 1983 in Forest Lawn Memorial Park conducted by Hominy Lodge and the Rev. Gordon Hux. Groce Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
