Died - On his plantation in this Parish, on the 6th instant, John Close, in the 81st year of his age.

John Close was born in Kentucky, but inhabited our Parish for about 60 years. In 1815, he fought at New Orleans under Jackson, as captain of a militia company, where he was subsequently appointed Major. He raised a numerous family, the greater part that has preceded him in the tomb. Those who were acquainted with Major Close knew him to be an excellent citizen, an affectionate father, an honest man and universally respected.

NOTE: His half-sister, Sr. Elizabeth "Betsy" Wells [FAG Memorial #7649609], became a nun. She and Sr. Theresa Carrico were the two founding nuns of the "Sisters of Charity of Nazareth" in Nazareth, Kentucky. She later served as a nun at St. Catharine of Sienna and lastly became a tertiary at St. Rose Priory. She also raised the youngest daughter of James Hendrick and Mary "Polly" (Mills) Hendrick, who also became a nun.
