He was born in Wilmington, NC, October 13, 1923, son of the late Lloyd M. Smith, Sr. and Stella Batson Smith.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II having served honorably in the United States Army with the 165th Combat Engineers. He was employed by the City of Wilmington in the communications division with the Wilmington Fire Department retiring after thirty-seven years of service. Mr. Smith was a member of First Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-one years, Peggy Jones Smith; sons, Jeff Smith and wife Debbie, and Eddie Smith all of Wilmington; grandchildren, Meagan, Whitney, Christopher, and Erin; great-grandchildren, Max and Carson; a brother, Raymond A. Smith and wife Juanita of Wilmington; a nephew, Billy Roberts and wife Jackie of Leland; and several other nieces and nephews; a daughter-in-law, Kathie Heath of Wilmington; and a very special friend, Kathy Spelman of Wilmington.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Billy Smith, and two sisters, Lola Belle Rackley and Juanita Melton.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at First Christian Church with the Rev. Lance Perry officiating.
There will be a reception for family and friends at the church immediately following the service.
