John Wesley "Pete" Eckles was the son of John Benjamin Eckles and Elizabeth Gertrude "Lizzie" Doxey.

Pete never married and had no children. He was born unable to speak or hear. He went to a school in Austin, Texas for the hearing impaired and learned to sign. Some of my favorite memories of him as a child was him teaching me and my siblings how to sign phrases such as "I love you," "Goodbye," "Hello," "Pass the butter."
He was one of the most interesting people in my family because he had two major disabilities to go through life with, and he let none of it interfere with his enjoyment of his own life. Imagine going through this world unable to speak or hear and living until age 81! Amazing. It says a lot for him personally. Whenever I hear the song "Climb every Mountain," I think of my sweet Uncle Pete, so full of life and triumph. He touched my heart with his simple and giving spirit. Uncle Pete is one of the people I will rush to hug when I meet him again on the other side.
