Silver Baron. He was a partner in the Bonanza Firm with William Shoney O'Brien, John Mackay, and James Fair. In 1873, they discovered the greatest silver deposit in US history, later known as the Comstock Lode, in northern Nevada. He incorporated the South Pacific Coast Railroad (SPCRR) with Alfred E. "Hog" Davis and Comstock Lode millionaire James Fair on March 24, 1876. It was likely the most successful narrow gauge railroad in California history, running from Alameda to Santa Cruz, a distance of 80 miles.
