Son of Obadiah & Phebe (Ludlow) Foster. He was orphaned at about age 9. Excerpts from a diary kept by a Mr. Hildreth indicate he raised him. These entries were found in a card index in a Southampton, NY library:
"July 18, 1838 - Edward Foster, a boy I brought up, went to sea on a whaling cruise today.
"Aug 5, 1839 - Edward Foster sailed on a whaling cruise in the Tuscarora.
"Feb. 9, 1849 - Edward Foster came home from a whaling cruise in the ship "Sheffield" with Capt. Eli White, Master. They came from the Arctic with 4300 barrels of oil, set out Oct. 12, 1845.
"Oct. 25, 1849 - Edward Foster set out for California.
"Nov. 28, 1854 - Edward Foster and John Dunbar set out for Illinois. John Dunbar was a native of Illinos, and they both had been California digging gold there for some years."

The Putnam Record, February 7, 1906, front page:
"Foster - At his home south of Florid, Friday, January 23, 1906, Mr. Edward Foster, age 88 years, 1 month and 29 days, passed peacefully to rest. Deceased was born in South Hampton (sic, Southampton), New York, November 27, 1817. Came to this state at an early age, and was married to Sara Ann Cassell of Florid, Putnam County, Illinois, March 19, 1857, who preceded him to the better world, April 8, 1893. To this union were born nine children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. All of whom were present at the funeral except one daughter, who was unable to be there. The funeral took place at the church in Florid, Reverend H. Bell, conducting the services and was attended by a large concourse of bereaved relatives and sympathizing friends."
