Mr. Abernathy was born August 10, 1929, in Gaffney, SC, son of the late Fay Abernathy and Lummie Allison Abernathy.
He was a graduate of Gaffney High School and attended Limestone College in Gaffney and Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC.
Mr. Abernathy served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from USLife Credit Corporation and World Acceptance Corporation as Senior Auditor.
After retirement he was an independent auditor for different banks in and around the Atlanta, GA area.
Survivors, including his wife, are one son; Douglas Abernathy of Mt. Pleasant, one grandchild; Katie Abernathy of Mt. Pleasant, three step children; Ron West of Rocky Mount, NC, Jeffery West of Raleigh, NC and Sharlene Owens of Summerville, six step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and two sisters; Dorothy A. Mitchum and Diane A. Payne, both of Anderson.
Interment was in Frederick Memorial Gardens, Gaffney.
