Joseph Vasili Hassan, 24, regrettably died Tuesday morning Sept. 25, 2007 due to an accidental overdose.

His mother Vasi Hassan, of Hayward Calif., coincidentally went to visit her son in San Louis Obispo the weekend of his death. On the morning of September 21, she noticed he was not breathing.

Joseph was put on life support until his father Hassan Hassan arrived from Houston, Texas, and maternal grandparents, Vasilios and Kanella Yiannakopoulos from Greece. He was surrounded by family and close friends until the 25th.

Joseph grew-up in Newark, Calif., where he was proud to call the east bay his home. His mother said while growing up "he was a mischievous bright and alert boy, he always wanted to learn."

Joesph's younger brother Adam, 22, also of Newark, Calif. was his best friend and apprentice. While growing up Joseph looked up to his Uncle Aleco and cousin Yanni (Yiannakopoulos), who he loved greatly.

Joseph was of Greek and Egyptian heritage and appreciated both cultures' experiences greatly. His identity with his cultures had a great influence on his life. Joseph enjoyed participating in the Greek-community often; he danced for the Oakland Greek Orthodox Church, celebrated Greek Easter -of course- and cherished his trips to Greece. Joseph also embraced his Egyptian Arabic culture; it was apparent to his friends when he participated in Ramadan. Though he had pride in his two cultures he was a promoter of diversity and love.

Joseph was widely known to regularly bust out break dancing or popping struts, attend kick boxing classes, involved in Street Fighter tournaments, traveling the world, enjoying the company of people and philosophizing about life.

Anyone who knew Joseph, whether it was for his whole life or just five minutes, experienced his charisma, intense and extraordinarily unique personality.

Joseph was a senior at California Polytechnic State University; department of business; studied abroad for a quarter at Copenhagen Business School, Frederiksberg, Denmark. His main academic interests were finance and law. His family was awarded his posthumous degree, winter 2008.

He will be awfully missed by his mother, father, beloved brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and the many friends he accumulated and touched during his short life.
