IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OF

Martha McLellan Matthews was a resident of Mobile, AL from 2001 until she died on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, in a Mobile hospital at the age of 88.
She was born on May 6, 1916 in Griffin, Union County, AR. She was the 5th of 9 children born to Walter Samuel Golden and Mattie Lea Roseman. She was married to Charles Samuel McLellan on September 3, 1934, in Mena, AR and moved to Eagle Lake, TX where she lived with her family until 1953.
During those years she was a homemaker and mother of 4 children. She was an active member of Colley Memorial Methodist Church.
In 1953 she moved with her family to Austin, TX and lost her husband, Charles, in 1955. After Charles' death she was a clerical worker at the Department of Public Safety where she met Billy Joe Matthews. They were married on January 5, 1962. After their marriage she worked at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Austin.
They later moved to Falcon Heights, TX where she became a postal clerk and Bill was the Falcon State Park manager. She retired as postmaster for Falcon Heights in 1979 and enjoyed oil painting, ceramics, teaching Sunday school and being with her family and friends.
In April 1987, after the death of her husband, she moved to Kerrville, TX to be near her oldest daughter, Jennie. While in Kerrville she was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church where she enjoyed the fellowship of her many friends and was active in the seniors "Prime Time" choir and working with the pre-school children until 1999 when she moved to an assisted living center. In 2001 she moved to Mobile, AL where her youngest daughter, Sarah, could help with her care.
She lived her life as a Christian and touched the lives of her family and friends. She was loved by all who were blessed to know her.
Martha McLellan Matthews was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, three brothers, one granddaughter, three great-grandsons, and two husbands. She is survived by four children: Jennie S. Motheral & Bruce of Kerrville, TX; Harriet L. Davidson & Bill of Brazoria, TX; Sarah J. Smith & Richard of Theodore, AL; and Charles Robert McLellan & Susan of Austin, TX. She was also survived by her brother, Richard L. & wife and her sister, Pearl. Also, her nine grandchildren and twenty Great-grandchildren which includes eight great-granddaughters and twelve great-grandsons. She was also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Graveside services were held at the Masonic Cemetery in Eagle Lake, TX on Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Service was conducted by her son-in-law James Richard Smith. Arrangements by Mobile Memorial Gardens, Mobile, AL and Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake, TX.
Honorary Pallbearers are all grandsons and great-grandsons.
