Son of Judson and Jerusha E. (Elliot) Balcom, grandson of John Balcom.


After the death of his mother, he lived with his elder brother, Madison A. Balcom, in Grafton, where he was enumerated in 1860.


On 12 Jul 1861 Gilbert, a shoemaker, mustered into service with Company G, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Grafton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 20 years, 2 months and 4 days old.


On 5 Mar 1862 Gilbert was promoted to Corporal.


On 25 Sep 1862 his brother, Willard, enlisted in Co. E, 51st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and in Aug 1864, in Co. F, 1st Bn Massachusetts Heavy Artillery.


Gilbert Earl Balcom died on 12 Dec 1862 at Continental Hospital, Washington, DC, unmarried, of disease of the heart. (Death is registered in Grafton.) He was 21 years, 7 months and 4 days old.


On 10 Aug 1864 another of his brothers, Marcus, enlisted in Co. F, 1st Bn Massachusetts Heavy Artillery.
