He was born on August 24, 1936, in Perea, New Mexico, the son of Joseph Samuel and Karen Christensen Young. He was educated in Salt Lake City schools. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He operated a high pressure steam cleaning business in Payson. He served in the U.S.Marines Corp.
