The son of Joseph Harren, he married Margaret E. Betz or Bretz and fathered Mary Ann (b. @1848), Sarah Ann Elizabeth (b. 10/16/50 - married Peter Elijah Meiller), Margaret (b. @1852), Velerial (b. @1854), Lydia (b. 02/21/56 - married Jacob H. Brown), Daniel W. (b. 09/03/58), Levi Jacob (b. 03/28/63), and David Henry (b. 10/27/65). In 1860, he was a farmer living in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 6' 0" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 14, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 15 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865, at New Berne, North Carolina.

By 1870, he was living with his family in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County. Cause of his death is listed as "dropsy."
