Helene Maria Torgersdatter-Dotset was born April 3, 1849, on Tomten Farm in Eina, Vestre Toten, Norway, she was christened on April 29, 1849, and confirmed in 1863, Aas Kirke.

Her parents were Torger Hansen (Dyrud) and Gulline Engebretsdatter Sangnes.

Helene left Christianis, Norway on May 1, 1869, for America. They emigrated from Decorah to Dakota Territory in 1873, settling in Norway Township, Lincoln County.

Helen Marie Dodseth was born in Vestre Toten, Norway, April 3, 1849. She immigrated to America in 1869 and took up her residence near Decorah, Ia., where she was united in marriage two years later to John Hegnes. In 1873 they moved to South Dakota to settle on a homestead in Norway Township, in Lincoln county. She resided on the homestead until 1911 when they moved to Canton, and lived there until her death on March 5, 1925, at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 2 days. Her husband preceded her in death July 4, 1923. She leaves to mourn her loss thirteen children, twenty grand children and one sister, Mrs. Peter Amlien, in Norway.

The children are: Claus Hegnes, Baltic; Gretta Hegnes, Canton; Albert Hegnes, Beresford; Olof Hegnes, Alcester; Helmer Hegnes, Centerville; Peter Hegnes, Canton; Mathias Hegnes, Hudson, of South Dakota; Emma Kaldor, Eugene, Ore; Mollie Anderson, Hudson; Deolyn Hegnes, Alma Overseth, Canton; Milda Berg, Sioux Falls, and Helmina June Erpe, Canton.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house and 2:30 from the church. Revs. Blilie, of Flandreau and Brown and Rasmusssen from this city officiating. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery beside her husband and children who preceded her in death.

Rev. Blilie was a schoolmate of Mrs. Hegnes in Norway. All of the children, with the exception of Mrs. Berg, of Sioux Falls, were present at the funeral, she being unable to attend. Other out of town guests attending were Mrs. M. Egge and daughter Miss Carrol, and Mr. and Mrs. John Sorun, of Sioux Falls.
