Ernest David Pickett was born to Arvil Pickett and Grace Angeline Whetstone in Butler, Bates County, Missouri. His brothers and sister are Howard Leroy, Glenn Arvil, and Violet (Hart). The family moved to Greeley, Colorado, when he was five years old (1904). In 1913, the family moved to Idaho. He received his education in Bonneville County schools.

On December 20, 1919, Ernest married Sylvia Iola Mace in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho. Born to them are Marjorie Jean (Mullen), Helen Irene (Reed) and Rulon Dale. Ernest served as an official in the New Sweden Irrigation District. He served on the Riverdale school board and as an officer in the Riverdale Grange, and the Farm Bureau. He farmed in the Riverdale area for many years. After retiring from farming in 1962, Ernest and Sylvia spent their summers in Island Park, Idaho, and winters in Mesa, Arizona with their Riverdale and New Sweden friends until Sylvia's death in 1980. Ernest and Sylvia had 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
