Donald R. Young, 77, of Wallace Avenue, died at 6:23 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
He retired as a sergeant from Columbus Fire Department and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a 1945 graduate of Columbus High School, where he played basketball. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Elks Lodge and the Senior Center.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home on Washington Street. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum with a veteran's service by Bartholomew County Color Guard.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Alzheimer's Association.
Born in Columbus Nov. 21, 1925, Mr. Young was the son of Raymond "Brigham" and Virginia Scofield Young. He married Kathryn M. Wilhite on June 29, 1947.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Vic Young of Germantown, Tenn.; a daughter, Nancy Young of St. Louis; a sister, Naomi Jackson of Dallas; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Young of Germantown.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, James Koehler.

The funeral for Donald R. Young, 77, of Wallace Avenue was Wednesday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Borchert officiating. Donna Tull was organist, and Joyce Crowder was vocalist.
Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery. Pallbearers and honor guards were members of Columbus Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers were all other current and former Columbus firefighters in attendance. Military graveside rites were conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Mr. Young died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
