Col. Frank Mayer was a legendary buffalo hunter. He lived and died in Fairplay, CO. His home and guns are in the South Park City Museum in Fairplay. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and became one of the most noted buffalo hunters in the West. Toward the end of his buffalo hunting days, Mayer obtained one of the famous .45/120 550 Buffalo Sharps. This gun also had a 32 inch barrel, weighed 16 pounds, and it, too, had the 3¼'' chamber. He fitted a Vollmer telescopic sight to the rifle and later stated, "...with that old Sharps in my hands, I had the deadliest rifle ever made in America..." Directions to grave: Keep right upon entering cemetery and drive to the south end. Circle to the left. As you climb the slight rise, a little lane angles to the left. Alone on the right is the pink marble stone, about eighteen inches high, marking his grave.
