He was born March 21, 1923, in Victoria, to the late Katie Cherry and John Thomas Kitchens Sr.
He was a retired plumber.
Survivors: daughters, Idella Barnes, Georgia Tolbert, Ophelia Nuells, Hazel Scott, Jannie Rucker, Ruthie Nuells, Tommie Jo Nuells, and Lisa Faye Williams, all of Victoria, and Alice Walker of Long Beach, Calif.; son, Dwight Kitchens of Marysville, Washington, D.C.; sisters, Mary Louise Barefield of Victoria and Beatrice Ahart of North Carolina; brother, Robert Willis of Victoria; 44 grandchildren; and 71 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: wife, Ophelia Haynes Kitchens; daughter, Sarah Kitchens; sons, James Kitchens, William Kitchens, Herman Kitchens, and Allin Ray Kitchens; sisters, Sarah Turner, Minerva Ahart, and Elaine Kitchens; brothers, Robert Kitchens, Alonzo Kitchens, Charles Kitchens, and John Kitchens; and three grandchildren.
