He served in the US Marine Corps from 1944-1945. He graduated from St Bernard's College (AL) with an Associate of Arts degree in 1948, from St Benedict's College (KS) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, from Notre Dame University (IN) with a Master of Arts degree in 1955, and from Stanford University (CA) with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1958. He did post-doctoral studies at the University of London in the United Kingdom in 1966.

He was a college professor between 1948 and 1976, teaching English and related subjects at St Benedict's College (KS), the University of Notre Dame (IN), Stanford University (CA), Emory University (GA), Rollins College (FL), University of Central Florida (FL), and the Christopher Newport College (VA). While at Rollins, he became faculty advisor for and member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
