He graduated from St Bernard's College (AL) with an Associate of Arts degree in 1948, from St Benedict's College (KS) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, from Notre Dame University (IN) with a Master of Arts degree in 1955, and from Stanford University (CA) with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1958. He did post-doctoral studies at the University of London in the United Kingdom in 1966.
