Former Auxiliary of the Metropolitan See of Braga, Monsignor Carlos Francisco Martins Pinheiro was born to José Maria Pinheiro and Carlota Joaquina Martins Pereira, in Vila Praia da Âncora, Portugal, on May 30, 1925, and received his early education at the Instrução Primária, and at the Escola Comercial e Industrial of Viana do Castelo.

In 1939, he entered the Seminário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição of Braga, later undergoing a course in philosophy and theology at the Seminário Conciliar of Braga in 1947. In 1950, he was named director of the "Cenáculo", the review of Braga's Seminary.

Ordained to the priesthood at 26 years of age in Braga, on July 8, 1951, successively, D. Carlos was named prefect, professor and economist of the Seminário de Filosofia of Braga.

In 1953, Pinheiro was nominated for coadjutor of Canon Correia, parish priest of Ponte de Lima and chaplain of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital and of the Colégio D. Maria Pia. Named parish priest of Feitosa e Arca, he was appointed arcipreste of the Julgado Eclesiástico de Ponte de Lima in 1958.

During his 19 years as parish priest, he exercised diverse charges, including those of vice-supplier of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital, director of the Externato Liceal Cardeal Saraiva, president of the Direcção da Oficina S. José, professor in the day school and college, launched the Caritas in his parish, founded the Museu dos Terceiros and the Instituto Limiano, for which installations he restored the churches of Santo António dos Frades and of the Third Order, which where in state of ruins.

He also organized several cultural expositions in collaboration with the Museu Soares dos Reis do Porto, with the help of the town council and of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkia, restoring the Igreja Matriz, which was also degraded and in eminent ruins.

Obtaining a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Salamanca, Spain, he exercised in the last year of parochial ministry, the charge of deputy head of the Seminary of Philosophy, during the year 1968, being nominated in the same year pro-vicar general of the Archdiocese of Braga. In 1958, he was invested as canon of the Primatial Cathedral of Braga.

In the year of 1978, the then Archbishop of Braga, D. Eurico Dias Nogueira, in collaboration with Msgr. Júlio Tavares Rebimbas, Bishop of Porto, put his merits to the service of the new Diocese of Viana do Castelo, where exercised the charges of vicar general, judge of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal and president of the Commission of Art and Culture. On February 22, 1982, Pope John Paul II nominated him chaplain of His Holiness with the title of Monsignor.

At 59 years of age, D. Carlos was appointed by the named Pope, Auxiliary of the Metropolitan See of Braga, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Dumium on April 28, 1985, inside the Cripta do Sameiro, Braga, from Archbishop Eurico Dias Nogueira, assisted by Archbishop Júlio Tavares Rebimbas and Bishop Armindo Lopes Coelho.

Following his episcopal consecration, Bishop Pinheiro was named vicar general, president of the Diocesan Commission of Religious Art and Works and was trusted in a special way, with the Pastoral Region of the Arciprestados of Vila do Conde e Póvoa de Varzim, Esposende, Barcelos, and Vila Verde.

Member of the Comissão Episcopal Mista Bispos, he retired from office at 75 years of age on November 10, 2000. Along the years he published numerous works, including : "A Ínsua de Caminha" (1949) ; "Museu de Arte Sacra de Ponte de Lima" (1974), "O Novo Altar-Mor da Igreja Matriz" (1963) ; "O Colégio D. Maria Pia e a sua influência na comunidade paroquial de Ponte de Lima" (1971) ; "Instituto Limiano – Museu dos Terceiros – Documentos" (between 1962 and 1982) ; and "Guia do Visitante do Museu dos Terceiros" (1983).

Bishop Carlos Pinheiro passed away after a lengthy illness in the morning of Friday, June 4, 2010, aged 85. Funeral Mass was said at the Cathedral of Braga on Saturday, June 5, at 10 am., followed by another Requiem Mass at the Vila de Ponte de Lima at 15 hrs. According to his wishes, his remains where interred in the cemetery of his native Vila Praia de Âncora.
