Harold Lloyd Beickel, 79, of La Grande died Feb. 2 at a local care center. A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Cemetery. Daniels Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Beickel was born Dec. 28, 1923, to John H. and Vera Elizabeth Atkinson Beickel in Perry. He graduated from La Grande High School and served in the Navy during World War II on the USS President Adams, known as the luckiest ship in the service. His two brothers and his father served at the same time.

He married Inez A. Amble and worked as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and working with his hands. He remodeled several homes in addition to building a log home.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Theresa and Jerry Collins of Umatilla, Deborah and Robert Cleveland of La Grande, and Gregory and Sherry Beickel of Clackamas; one grandson; a brother, Elmer Beickel, and a sister, Lucille Ogilvie, both of La Grande, and other relatives. His wife died in 1970, and a brother, Jack Beickel, also died earlier.
