GEORGE WASHINGTON CLOUSE
OBITUARY

George Washington Clouse was born May the 20th 1808, in Washington Co., Tenn. And departed this life June the 5th, 1893. Age 85 years and 16 days. His father, Aaron Clouse, returned from the Creek war in the year 1812, and died in a few days after reaching his home. Mary Polly Clouse, his widow, and mother of the deceased, then moved from Washington County, to Sweetens Cove, Marion Co., Tenn. And lived there until the year 1836. He then moved to Shellmound, Tenn., where he spent the remainder of his life. August 24th 1837, he was married to Lydia Watson who still lingers on the shore of time. A few years later the deceased attached himself to the Freewill Baptist church. In 1867 the Missionary Baptist church organized at Macedonia, near Shellmound, Tenn. He then joined that branch of the Christian Church, and lived a consistent member of the same until death. Brother Clouse was a very positive man; he was strictly honest and truthful. He spoke of Heaven as his future home.

He bore his afflictions with fortitude and submission. He leaves a widow, five children, and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss. May they imitate his virtues and avoid his mistakes. May they all meet again in that home in heaven. L.N. Munsey

According to Jim Christian

"George Clouse is listed as among the first documented settlers of Marion County, Tennessee. The 1830 Census Index lists Clouse as an included surname. The 1836 Tax List has Charles Clouse in District Eight - then that area of the County that was on the South side of the Tennessee River."

!SOURCE: "First Settlers of Marion County, TN" lists: James and William Standifer; George Clouse; Wiley Webb; Levi W. Webb; the 1833 census shows the Adam and Elinor Bible family which included 6 people. The Bibles lived in Nickajack Town. There is also, listed in the Cherokee Indian Agency Pass Book of 1801 the names of Matthew Sims and William Sims.

FARMERS Dist 8 - Below Tennessee River 1850 ... The state of Georgia borders lower side of this land:
George W. Clouse age 37 TN wife Lydia N.C.
Berry Webb age 26 TN wife Nancy TN
John Webb age 42 N.C. wife Nancy TN
Wiley Webb age 50 N.C. wife Patsy GA

List of members of the old Macedonia Baptist Church at Shellmound, Marion County, in 1882 includes:
John A. Clouse; Nanie Clouse; G. W. Clouse; Lydia Clouse; Martha Hughes; G. B. Clouse, Eliza Clouse; Nancy Rollins, William Rollins; T. L. Quaries; Mariah; Ellen Clouse; Anna Hoosier; J. P. Avery; Catie Avery; J. J. Belk; Jane Clouse; Anna Clouse; W. F. Clemens; Martin Scealf; John Webb, Emmie Webb ... further down a Susan E. Clouse.
The way these entries are written they appear to be husband and wife in many cases, such as G. W. (George Washington) Clouse and Lydia Clouse who definitely were married. It is unknown who the John and Emmie Webb are.

County's history: In 1777 by an act of North Carolina, Washington Co. N.C. was created from Wilkes and Burke Counties of North Carolina. It included all of present day Tennessee. Jonesborough was the county seat. In 1787 a 12 mile strip (S.C.) from Mississippi to the Atlantic Ocean came through lower TN, through now Marion County, TN. In 1796 Tennessee became a state. This may be why the accounts of birth places are so often confused. If our people were in this area during these years they could have stayed in the same house and been in 3 different states in a matter of 30 years or so.

From Cathy Armstrong ...
The George I referenced in my e-mail earlier today that I called George b. 1813 should have been George b. 1808. He is the same one you have listed as George Washington Clouse III. (There actually was a George Washington Clouse b. 1813, but I think he was the son of William Clouse. Don't quote me on that - I'd have to check some things first and I'm relying on memory!). The one listed as George Washington Clouse III - the information contained in the memorial pertains to one born 1808 with Aaron as father. The wife and children listed belong to the one b. 1808, in other words - so yes, these two are the same person. The one you have listed as George Washington Clouse II is the one I believe went to Garrard County, KY and is not buried there in Marion County. Pat's book reported that he was, but again, since it wasn't her line and he disappeared from the area, I think she just didn't look a lot farther for him.

Pat wrote, "In the Federal Census 1830 Marion County, Tn we find him listed as being between fifty and sixty with one male child between fifteen and twenty. He was still living in Marion County in 1840 and was between sixty and seventy years of age. He was living with another male who was evidently the same male who was with him in 1830. The younger male being between twenty and thirty in 1840. His wife was between twenty and thirty and he had two male children under five. George II apparently had died between 1840 and 1850 because he was not listed in the 1850 census."

In actuality, by looking at the actual 1830 census images, there is a male aged 15-20 in the household with a FEMALE between the age of 50-60! In 1840, the male and family is as Pat reported but there is again a FEMALE aged 60-70 in the household with the family. I believe this female to be Mary (Polly) Clouse, the widow of Aaron. So there was never a male of the appropriate age to be George II on those censuses - I believe that Pat just basically read them wrong or something. So many people have taken her work as true and not checked it out for themselves, but this is what I found I when checked the actual census images.

Could this family possibly have used a different name from time to time so this isn't so confusing??! I think almost all of the sons of George I had a child named George Washington Clouse - and he had a lot of sons! And then all of them seem to have named a child George as well! The George in Garrard County, KY that I believe to be George II also named a son George W. Clouse. He was my 3ggrandfather. No one in our family knows what the "W" stood for but everyone as far back as I could talk to assumed it was "Washington." And they assumed this with no knowledge of the TN Clouses so it probably was! He didn't name one of his sons George W, thank goodness, but he only had two sons and the other children were daughters - otherwise he probably would have! And his brother did, too!

Just in case you decide to look into the side of the family (I don't know how much you're into this), "my" George went to Indiana from Kentucky in 1829 and so appears on the census there in 1830.

So... to answer your question, I think the three George Washington Clouses you have listed are actually two separate people, with the ones b. 1808 and b. 1813 being the same one, and the one b. 1770 being a different person but not actually buried in that cemetery.

Hope this helps?
