MOSES B HALL WAS 100 YEARS OLD
...from Linesville Herald of 9 Jun 1915
Few people are awarded the privlege of celebrating their 100th birthday and as important aspects in the life of Moses B Hall of this place, Tuesday 8 Jun 1915 stands out to him, his relatives & friends as one that is surmounted by none. MrHall has lived during the greatest period of advancement of civilization the world has ever known & as a man with the weight of years upon him, he is exceedingly bright & cheerful & should indeed see many more beautiful Junes like the present. Of all the reunions of the Hall family the one at the home of Henry B Hall of Linesville was the largest and most important and the centenarian with his children & his children's children gathered about him enjoyed Tuesday to the full extent. MrHall, the honored guest, was born in FairfieldTwp, FranklinCnty, VT on 8 Jun 1815 just 5 months after the Battle of New Orleans, which virtually closed the second war between England & America. Although a century ago, that state was not scarce in population & until he moved to his farm in SadsburyTwp, this county, soon after 1845, did he find a habitation which would be considered anything like pioneer life. On leaving Vermont, the subject of this sketch lived for 3 years in Canada, going to New York State, later to Ohio & then to Greenville PA where he became acquainted with Miss Sarah Hause who became his wife in 1843 & where Henry Hall of this place was born. Soon afterwards he took up his residence on the farm 3 miles from Hartstown, at the time when the Erie Canal had just opened up for traffic and boats were operating only as far as Greenville. MrHall was a carpenter & joiner by trade, later taking up farming. Greenville then was a place of only a hotel & 2 or 3 stores. MrHall was an infant of 10 days when the memorable Battle of Waterloo was fought. Born during the second term of James Madison, he has lived during the administration of every president of this United States except the first 3, George Washington, John Adams & Thomas Jefferson. He was a man of 29 when the first telegraphic message was flashed over the wire from Baltimore to WashingtonDC announcing the nomination of JamesK Polk as the Democratic nominee for President. When a lad of 13, ground was broken by President John Quincy Adams for the first mile of railroad built in the United States. He was 46 years old when the Civil War broke out in 1861 & was too old for the draft or for enlisting. The telegraph, the telephone, the trolley car, the use of electricity, the airship & wireless telegraph have all been developed since MrHall became an old man. He has lived during the program of 4 wars, 1812-15, Mexican War 1846-8, Civil War 1861-5 & Spanish-American War 1898-9 in which the public has become engaged.

He is the father of 10 children, 9 of which are living & the oldest is Henry Hall, of this place, a Civil War veteran who is 70 years old. The others are SamuelB-Transfer, Mrs Ida Foust-this place, ElmerC-Shermansvl, MrsElla Bates-Williamsfield, MrsNelson Gehr-this place, Daniel-Williamsfield, MrsCC Freeland-Cambridge Springs & BF-Girard. Besides the children, there are 35 grandchildren, 46 gr grandchildren & 1 gr gr grandchild. The lawn of Henry Hall was the scene of the very pleasant reunion on Tuesday & nearly 150 friends & neighbors paid homage to the venerable host & remained for a dinner & the interesting program. People were present from Dorset OH, Cleveland OH, Painesville OH, West Williamsfield OH, Greenville, Girard, Albion, Cambridge Springs & throughout this entire vicinity. Rev WO Calhoun, Rev EB Dwyer, MrsIda Foust-Greenville, each had a place on the program while there were recitations & musical numbers. Among those present were Marjorie Ellen Brown of Greenville-MrHall's gr gr granddau & William Dudley aged 91 years of Shermansville.
