His first wife was Elizabeth Ellen Payton, the daughter of Walter Payton and Sarah Harvey. They were the parents of: William W. Green (b. 13 Apr 1847), Margaret A. Green (b. 2 Aug 1852 and her twin (who died the next day). Elizabeth died on August 26, 1854 in Grayson County. She was buried in the McCandless Cemetery on Sopring Lick Road, east of Yeaman, Kentucky.
