Mrs. Richard Ay, Mother of Ex-Miss America, Dies
Mrs. Paula Luttecke Ay, 55, wife of Richard F. Ay, 123 Park Ave., Ephrata, died unexpectedly Friday at 9:45 a.m. at her home. She had been under the care of a physician for a heart condition.
She was the mother of Evelyn Ay Sempier, who was "Miss America" in 1954.
Mrs. Ay was secretary-treasurer of the Ay Machine Tool and Die Co., Ephrata, operated by her husband and son, Richard.
BORN IN GERMANY
Born near Cassel, Germany, a daughter of the late Wilhelm and Emily Wagner Luttecke, she came to the United States in 1932, and resided in Ephrata since 1937. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, and the Woman's Club.
Mrs. Ay spent much time in translating letters from Germany received by county residents when they sent help to Germany following World War II.
Surviving are her husband, two children, Evelyn M., wife of Carl G. Sempier, Berwyn; and Richard W., Ephrata; four grandchildren, a sister, Gretel, wife of Heinz Lecke, Hamburg, Germany; and a brother, Emil Luttecke, New York City.
