Lottie L Neal was born on February 16, 1899, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Mary Jane Burch "Jennie", age 31, and Stephen Arnold Douglas Neal, age 37. She was one of nine children.

Lottie was named after her father's first wife, Charlotte, who died young. Lottie's own mother, Mary Jane "Jennie", passed away on June 12, 1914, at the age of 47. Lottie was 15 when her mother died.

On 30 Jun 1925 Lottie married Charles N Smith in Detroit, Michigan. It was the first marriage for both of them. Her occupation at the time of her marriage was "chocolate dipper". She lived in Detroit, Michigan for the remainder of her life. She had two children by this marriage:

She died at home on 8 February 1941 after an illness of two years. She was 41.
