Born in 1806 on the farm "Kantrud under Lower Fosse" in the Kvikne sub-parish of Nord-Fron Parish, Oppland County, Norway, in the historic region of Gudbrandsdalen, Gulbrand was the oldest of seven children born to Hans Arnesen and Marit Gulbrandsdatter. He was baptized 11 May 1806, probably at the Kvikne Church, and confirmed 29 Jun 1823 at the Kvikne Church in Nord-Fron. He married Anne Olsen Toftestuen 25 Oct 1832 in Fron Parish. She was born 19 May 1812 on the farm "Tøftestuen under Tøfte," the daughter of Ole Torgersen and Guri Olsdatter. They raised their nine children on Kantrud under Lower Fosse.
