Born 8 Feb 1843 on the farm Kantrud under Lower Fosse in the Kvikne sub-parish of Nord-Fron parish, Oppland County, Norway, in the historic region of Gudbrandsdalen, Gunder was the fifth of nine children born to Gulbrand Hansen and Anne Olsdatter. He was baptized 26 Mar 1843 at the Kvikne Church and confirmed 18 Jul 1858 at the Sødorp Church, also in Nord-Fron (in 1858, Nord-Fron held confirmations only at Sødorp, so this doesn't mean he lived at a different place).
