Born 28 Sep 1839 on the farm "Kantrud under Lower Fosse" in the Kvikne sub-parish of Nord-Fron parish, Oppland County, Norway, in the historic region of Gudbrandsdalen, Johannes was the fourth of nine children born to Gulbrand Hansen and Anne Olsdatter. He was baptized 27 Oct 1839 at the Kvikne Church and confirmed 9 Jul 1854 at the Sødorp Church, also in Nord-Fron (in 1854, Nord-Fron held confirmations only at Sødorp, so this doesn't mean he lived at a different place).
