Rev. Boatman was a minister in the Methodist Church for over 40 years. Following the death of his parents he and his brother, Louis DeWitt, were raised by their aunt, Eliza Janie and her husband, John Allen Boatman. He was also a Methodist Minister. He and his wife, Ruby Ellen Clark, had three children: John; Marie; and David.

Chaplain Boatman served at Camp Skokie Valley, Illinois, the 5th Army Traveling Show, among other places, prior to arriving in France, then Germany, and returning to his new wife and family in Texas,
