1. Francis was not even 1 yr old when they left England for South Africa.

2. While still an infant, a Negro War broke out in Africa. Boy babies were being killed, his mother hid him in dirty clothes under her bed.

3. He had no formal education, only what his mother and father taught him.

4. When older, he learned the trade of a tanner.

5. He and his parents became Mormons in 1855. They gave up their land, home and herds in exchange for passage to America. Their journey took 6 months to reach the eastern shores of America, where they began another journey to Utah. From Africa to Utah took two long years of continuous travel. They came on the ship Alacrity, in 1859

6. He and his family arrived in Salt Lake City from South Africa in 1860

7. Francis fought in the Civil War in Lot Smith's Co. of Mounted Volunteers at Kaysville, Utah, for a period of 3 months.

8. They moved to Utah's southland to build up the little town of Middleton in 1862.

9. Francis joined the James Andrus Co. to fight the Indians in defense of their homes.

10. Francis and the Imlay family moved to New Harmony in 1863.

11. Francis and Ann Elizabeth Imlay married in New Harmony on Dec 26, 1865.

12. He was called to be body guard to escort Brigham Young from Cedar City to St George, and back again.
