Edward Francis Motter was born on August 15, 1859 in Pennsylvania to James and Elizabeth Motter (1840-1900). He married Helen Virginia Turner in 1884 in Jefferson, West Virginia, together they had 7 children Bessie Estelle (Motter) Moyer (1888–1953), Helen Elizabeth (Motter) Kimmel (1891–1983), John E. Motter (1893–1942), Amy Rebecca (Motter) Morrow (1896–1987), Florence A. Motter (1898–1904), Edna Esther Motter Vaughn (1901–1951) and Pearl Irene (Motter) Mellinger (1906–2007). Edward worked as a farmer in South Middleton for many years. The 1910 Census record indicates that Edward's daughter, Bessie, and her husband of 1 year, Harry Moyer, lived next door to the Motter's. Harry worked as a laborer on the Motter farm. Edward passed away due to complications with albuminuria on December 18, 1926,
