Ernest Frank Calhoun

Born on March 26, 1926 in Waynesburg, Kentucky, Ernie passed away on August 21, 1999 at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, WA.

Ernie was the last living child and son born to James Scott Calhoun and Elda Carolina (Clark) Calhoun. Both of his parents were born in North Carolina. Ernie was raised in Kentucky, sadly losing his mother Elda around the age of 2. He later witnessed his father's murder at the age of 14. His father Scott was shot in the back. Childhood wasn't particularly kind to Ernie.

Ernie joined the US Navy at the age of 16, stating that he was born the year of 1924 in order to "be of age" to join. He served as a Gunner's Mate during WWII.

Ernie married Alice Jo Davidson on April 2, 1951 in Sparta, NC. Jo had just turned 17 when they snuck away to get hitched. The marriage record from North Carolina states her year of birth as 1930 (age 21). Apparently no ID or birth certificates were required during that time frame.

After getting married, Ernie and Jo traveled the United States following Ernie's jobs. Alaska, Ohio and Washington were the states in which the children were born. Ernie was an Operating Engineer and worked longest out of Local #302 in the Seattle, WA area after they decided to settle the family in Fall City, WA. He helped to build the Grand Coulee Dam in Coulee, WA as well as the area of Snoqualmie Pass where I-90 runs from Western WA into Eastern WA.

Ernie built the large home on Lake Alice Road in Fall City that the children grew up in. The family lived in an Air Stream on the property while building the home. Ernest loved horses, especially Arabians, and we always had horses on the property. He was excellent at working with rope and crafted many halters and lead ropes to use with the horses. He also raised Black Angus for a while in order to help feed the family.
Ernie was an avid fisherman, loved the forest and spent time grafting many fruit trees for the orchard. The family property had Black Walnut trees bordering the circular driveway that he'd brought from back east and planted from seed.

Survivors include his wife Jo Calhoun; sons Michael Calhoun (Brenda) of Elon College, NC; John Cahoun (Kim) of North Bend, WA; daughters Diane Higley (Bill) of Bothell, WA; Donna-Sue Howatson (Mike) of North Bend, WA; two sisters Mildred Danner (Charles) of Harrison, Michigan and Ollie Shehan of Gibsonburg, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were on August 25, 1999 at Preston Baptist Church and arrangements were made by Flintoff's Funeral Home in Issaquah, WA.

World War II veteran served in the United States Navy.
