JAMES E. CONNELL DIES AT HOME HERE AFTER SHORT ILLNESS

James E. Connell, aged about 78 years, for the past fifty-six years a prominent citizen and business man of Baldwinsville, passed away in the early morning of Tuesday, November 30, at his home on Oswego street. He had been confined to his home for just a week, being stricken with illness, which soon developed into pneumonia, on Tuesday, the 23rd.

Mr. Connell was born on a farm in the town of Clay, September 7, 1848. His early life was spent on a farm near Little Utica, his time, while he was not in school, being divided between the farm and his father's store in Lysander village. In 1870 he moved to Baldwinsville and became a member of the firm of E. Connell & Co., when the business was opened in this village. The business was conducted here and at Lysander under the name of E. Connell & Co., until 1879, when E. Connell retired and the firm name became L. W. & J. E. Connell, the late Lansing W. Connell becoming a partner with his cousin. In March,
1897, L. W. Connell retired from the business and a few years later, J. Carl Connell, only son of J. E. Connell, became an active partner and assumed a partial management of the store.

Mr. Connell was always actively interested in the activities pertaining to the welfare of the village, the town, the county and the state. He was a member of the first Board of Water Commissioners and took an active part in securing the bountiful supply of pure water which the village enjoys today. He served two terms, 1904 and 1905, as village president.

He represented the Town of Lysander on the Board of Supervisors in 1906 and 1907, and was assemblyman from the first Onondaga County district in 1910 and 1911. He was a
man of good judgment and his advice was often sought in village and county matters.

Mr. Connell was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this village and was superintendent of the Sunday school for more than 25 years. He sang in the choir for many years. A member of the Masonic bodies of the village, he was always active and gave liberally of his time for the upbuilding of the orders. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Baldwinsville State Bank, and of Riverview Cemetery Association.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice Burdick Connell; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Sanborn of Farmington, N. H., and Mrs. Wheeler Smith of Syracuse; a son, J. Carl Connell
of Baldwinsville and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the home, Rev. R. C. Hebblethwaite, pastor of Baldwinsville Methodist Episcopal Church, and Rev. F.
W. Fuess, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Masonic services will be conducted at the grave in Riverview cemetery.
