United States Consul General to Beirut, appointed by President Grant in January 1872. Due to ill health, he retired in 1880 and settled in Jaffa. He was living in Syria for many years, and had been the court of last resort to the warlike Arabs in the Sahara Desert, and it was to him they took all their disputes, and his was the final words. He was a grand-nephew of the US President Madison.
