Leslie E. Evjen, 91, passed away June 6, 2010, in the comfort of his home at Thomas Landing Assisted Living in Rice Lake.

Leslie was blessed with good health till the last nine months of life when he suffered a hip fracture, followed by discovery of colon cancer. Leslie put up a good fight before the cancer and congestive heart failure shortened his life. During the last month, Leslie enjoyed visits from many friends and family to celebrate his long and industrious life.

Leslie was always gracious and appreciative of those around him, making sure to give words of "thanks." He was always a "farm boy" at heart.

Born in the Norwegian community of Cedar Rapids, north of Glen Flora, Leslie attended a country school through eighth grade, graduating from high school in Bruce. Leslie and Dorothy Boyer married in 1940 in Hawkins. In 1942, Leslie, Dorothy and two friends struck out for California in Model "A" Fords, to work at Douglas Aircraft building planes for the war effort. They returned to Glen Flora in 1943 and bought a 160-acre dairy farm, which they farmed for 29 years. They later sold the farm and built a house in Glen Flora.

Leslie worked in maintenance for Flambeau School District in Glen Flora till retirement in 1984. Three years after Leslie's retirement, Dorothy retired from the postal service following twenty-five years of service. Leslie and Dorothy sold their home in 1998 and moved to Rice Lake to be closer to medical facilities and rented an apartment. They remained in the apartment until January 2010, when they moved to the Thomas Landing Assisted Living Community.

They joined the United Methodist Church and became part of the faith community and enjoyed the company of good friends. During their 12 years in Rice Lake, they drove to Ladysmith weekly to visit friends and Dorothy would visit her favorite beauty salon. Leslie was always active in his community working as a school board member in Glen Flora, Boy Scout Committee member, village board member in Glen Flora, a key planner and planner for the development and implementation of the water and sewage treatment facility in Glen Flora.

Upon moving to Rice Lake, Leslie joined the Golden "K" (Kiwanis) service club and delivered "Meals on Wheels" to person's homes, until the summer of 2009. Leslie always said a person would live a good life if one lived by the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

Leslie is survived by his wife Dorothy; and his children Wendy (Craig) Paulson, Bruce (Marge) Evjen and Gary (Karen) Evjen. He was blessed with grandchildren Matthew and Nathan Paulson; Sean and Todd Evjen; Jacqueline (Stuart) Bailey, Kim (Brian) Gilles and Heather Evjen; great grandchildren Destiny Paulson; Braden, Kloe and Gavin Evjen; Andrew and Hannah Bailey; Peter and Samuel Garland and Beau Gilles; sister Esther Schott and many friends.

He was preceded in death by parents Jacob and Anne Evjen.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, June 10, at First United Methodist Church in Rice Lake, followed by a luncheon.
