TRUETT BRYAN AKIN, JR., 77, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2007. Arrangements are with Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Born in Houston on August 4, 1929, Truett was the only child of Truett Bryan Akin, Sr. and Nettye Pearl Vernon. The family moved to Bryan, TX in 1943, where Truett excelled in academics and basketball during high school. It was in high school where he met his future wife, Peggie Jane Hargrove. They married in 1949, shortly before Truett's graduation from Texas A&M University with a bachelor of business administration degree. In 1950, Truett and Peggie moved to Houston where he began his long career in the oil service industry. His family relocated numerous times during his career, but wherever they lived, Peggie always made a comfortable home for the couple and their son, Truett Bryan Akin, III, and daughter, Julie Ann Akin. As soon as the boxes were unpacked in the new house, the family joined the nearest Baptist Church. Truett retired in Houston in 1992, where he would spend three years taking care of his elderly mother and then seven years lovingly taking care of his wife and sweetheart Peggie while her health declined. His family meant so much to him. He enjoyed attending activities involving his grandchildren and was always helping others. His impeccable yard and ability to fix everything were the envy of many; his quick sense of humor and gentle soul the delight of all. He was a man of great integrity. His parents, cherished wife of 52 years, Peggie, dearly loved son, Bryan, and infant granddaughter, Tracy, precede Truett in death. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Byron Pettit; daughter-in-law, Terri Akin; six grandchildren, Truett, IV and his wife, Elva; Rebecca Mackey and her husband, Shane; Patricia Akin, Kendall McCarley, Angela Akin and Evan McCarley; and two great-grandsons, Bryan and Gabriel Akin. Long after our tears dry, your memory will live in our hearts. We are so proud to be your family. Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 2, at 11 a.m., at Rest-Ever Memorial Park, 5103 N. Texas Avenue, Bryan, TX. Truett will be buried alongside his wife and near his parents. Rest in peace, Poppy. For those who wish, condolences may be left for the family at www.callawayjones.com.
