Council Grove Republican Friday April 8, 1904

Joseph Vincent Johnson was born July 25, 1858, in Carroll County, Indiana. The greater part of his life was spent near the place of his birth. He was married April 15, 1880, and the three daughters came to bless this home. His wife and one daughter died eight and nine years ago, after which he came to Kansas to make his home, in hopes that his health would be bettered thereby. But death came as a culmination of his struggle with disease, on the 1st day of April, 1904. He leaves to mourn his loss two daughters, Fannie E., and Mrs. Pearl Weaver, and one brother, Frank R. Johnson, and two sisters, besides other relatives in Indiana.

Brother Johnson has resided in our midst for eight years, and has made many and lasting in a business and social way. His memory will be cherished as a sincere friend and true and loyal citizen.

He joined the church when he was about 19 years of age, and only severed that connection when he was called to join the Church Triumphant in his eternal home. His faith was well founded and his trust sure. Unlike many another, he lived for his home, and those of his home will miss him most.

A number of times in the last year he has said that he was prepared for the great change. At the last death came without a struggle. As the end drew near he went to sleep and quietly slept away from time into eternity. He closed his eyes on earth in sleep, to open them to the glories of heaven.

After a short service at the house April 2, conducted by Rev. G. Jay Rhodes, the members of the A.O.U.W. took charge. They carried the corpse to the depot followed by a large number of sympathizing friends. As it was his wish the members of his family took his body back to bury him by the side of his wife in Asbury cemetery near Bringhurst, Indiana.
