Born Vivian Zetterberg in August of 1911 to Carl and Corinne Zetterberg in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Her mother died in 1914, when Vivian was three years old, of tuberculosis. She was later adopted by Josephine Morse and assumed the name Vivian Morse. Josephine died when Vivian was 9, and she continued to be raised by members of the Morse family.

Vivian attended Central High School in Duluth before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska for a time to live with her adoptive sister (Josephine's granddaughter, Helen Hopkins), where she graduated from Lincoln High School. She participated in the Girl Reserves, chemistry club, and university preparatory classes.

She later moved back to Duluth and married Robert Oscar Brown, Jr. on April 6, 1934. They had six children: four sons and two daughters. One son was stillborn in 1942.
