Susan Miller married James A. Hutchison, a native of Connecticut, in Athens county on October 29, 1840. They had two children, Clark and John.

After James' untimely death, she remarried another Nutmegger, the widowed Harley Carter, and they had a daughter Lovina and infant son Eben.
